Xie An's return from Mount Dong gave the idiom 东山再起 'to rise again from Mount Dong', to make a comeback. The 东山 of the Mencius line 孔子登东山而小鲁 'Confucius climbed the eastern hill and the state of Lu looked small' is a different hill, east of Lu, often identified with 蒙山.

In Guangzhou the old pairing 东山少爷, 西关小姐 sets the young masters of Dongshan, where Republican-era officials built villas, against the merchant daughters of Xiguan. The district was merged into 越秀区 in 2005, but the name is still used.
