Tips

history
He lived in retirement on 东山 in Kuaiji until past forty before agreeing to serve, which gave the idiom 东山再起 'to rise again from the Eastern Mountain', a comeback. In 383 the huge Former Qin army of 苻坚 was routed at the Fei River by troops under his nephew 谢玄. Reading the report over a game of weiqi, he only remarked that the youngsters had beaten the enemy, and played on.
culture
His Xie clan and the Wang clan of 王导 were the two great families of the Eastern Jin. 刘禹锡's line 旧时王谢堂前燕 'the swallows that once nested in the halls of the Wangs and Xies' looks back on their vanished glory.
