Tips

culture
Old Beijing families weighed everyone at 立夏, the start of summer, and again at 立秋, the start of autumn. The summer heat dulls the appetite, so most had lost weight, and they made it up with stewed pork, dumplings and roast meat.
usage
膘 is the fat on livestock, as in 上膘 "to fatten up", so using it of people is playful. Today 贴秋膘 is a common joking excuse for a big meat meal in August.
