Traditional Chinese custom 贴秋膘 ("stick on autumn fat"): eat hearty meat dishes on Liqiu to put on weight lost during the hot summer (苦夏). Also 啃秋, biting into a watermelon on this day.

The solar terms use (to establish) for the start of each season: 立春 spring, 立夏 summer, 立秋 autumn, 立冬 winter.
