From 《后汉书》: the scholar Gongsha Mu disguised himself as a hired laborer pounding grain with a pestle (杵) and mortar (臼). The scholar Wu You discovered his identity but befriended him anyway. 杵臼交 thereafter named friendships that cross social lines.
