Tips

usage
doesn't stand alone in modern Chinese - it's a bound morpheme. Two readings: páng in 彷徨/彷徉 (pacing, wandering - Lu Xun's 1926 short-story collection 《彷徨》 'Wandering' uses this reading); fǎng in 彷佛 (a literary variant of 仿佛 'as if'). The character is (step) + (direction / square) - 'stepping in directions', i.e. wandering.
history
Lu Xun's 《彷徨》 (1926) - together with 《呐喊》 (Call to Arms, 1923) - is one of the foundational collections of modern Chinese literature; the title captures the disorientation of intellectuals in early Republican China.

Components

radical
chì
step (radical form)
Left-side step radical - a small footstep, half of the full (crossroads). The indexing radical: 彷徨 is to wander aimlessly, pacing without direction - the radical contributes the actual footsteps. Same step-family: to go toward, to wait, statute, subtle ('walk in tiny steps'), to roam.
phonetic
fāng
direction; square
Right side supplies the sound: fāng to páng with f/p alternation. originally pictured a plough - later 'square, direction of the compass.' Same phonetic family: 仿 to imitate, room, to guard, 访 to visit, to release. The element adds flavour: a wanderer turning this way and that, with no fixed direction.
