One of the 九卿 (Nine Ministers) under the Qin and Han dynasties, responsible for the emperor's horses, carriages, and imperial pastures - a powerful post in an age when cavalry decided wars. The office name persisted into later dynasties as 太仆寺 (Court of the Imperial Stud).
