Tips

history
Ordered by the 乾隆 Emperor, it took about ten years and thousands of copyists. Some 3,500 works in nearly 80,000 scrolls were sorted into four divisions, 经 classics, 史 histories, 子 masters and 集 collections, the 'four storehouses' of its name. Seven hand-written sets were made, and wars later destroyed three of them.
culture
It was also a censorship campaign: books judged hostile to the Manchu Qing were burned or rewritten, some 3,000 titles in all. Its chief editor 纪晓岚 is better known to TV audiences as a witty courtier.
