The Zhou introduced the Mandate of Heaven (天命), the idea that rulers govern only while Heaven approves. It splits into Western Zhou (1046-771 BC) based at Hao and Eastern Zhou (770-256 BC) at Luoyi, with the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods inside the latter.
