The Zhou introduced the Mandate of Heaven (天命), the idea that rulers govern only while Heaven approves. It splits into Western Zhou (1046–771 BC) based at Hao and Eastern Zhou (770–256 BC) at Luoyi, with the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods inside the latter.
