Tips

usage
(shuā) literally 'to brush/swipe', but slangily means 'to do something repeatedly/in bulk' — 刷视频 (binge short videos), 刷剧 (binge a show), 刷弹幕 (spam bullet comments), 刷礼物 (rapid-fire gifting). 礼物 here are virtual icons (rockets, sports cars, castles) viewers buy and 'send' on screen during live broadcasts.
culture
Virtual gifts are how livestreamers earn most of their money. Each gift converts to platform revenue, of which the streamer gets a cut (often ~30-50%). The biggest gift on Douyin is 嘉年华 (Carnival) at 3,000 yuan a pop. See also 榜一大哥 (top donor).
