Tips

history
From the Liu-Song period 《·文学》 (Shìshuō Xīnyǔ, A New Account of the Tales of the World, 5th c.), where the critic Xie An praises a line in the Shijing: 雅人深致 'this line in particular has the deep refinement of an elegant mind'. The phrase originally praised poetic sensibility; in modern use it can describe any setting, hobby, or piece of writing that radiates quiet good taste.
register
Strongly literary; you will see it in art reviews, literary essays, and tea-culture writing — not in casual conversation.
