洪昇 spent over ten years on its 50 scenes, which follow 唐玄宗 and 杨贵妃 from their love through her death at 马嵬坡 to their reunion in the palace of the moon. The title is the hall where, in 白居易's 长恨歌, the lovers swear their vow: 七月七日长生殿.

With 孔尚任's 桃花扇 'The Peach Blossom Fan', it is one of the two great plays of the early Qing, paired as 'Hong in the south, Kong in the north'. A 1689 performance held during court mourning cost Hong Sheng his place at the imperial academy. It is still staged as 昆曲.
