Tips

history
Its full title is 南村辍耕录, after 陶宗仪's pen name 南村. The story goes that while farming he wrote notes on leaves whenever he stopped to rest, kept them in jars and buried them under a tree; after ten years his students copied them out as 30 scrolls, finished in 1366. 辍 means 'to stop' and 耕 'to plough'.
culture
It is a key source on Yuan law, theatre, painting and daily life, and the idiom 以毒攻毒 'to fight poison with poison' comes from it.
