history
In Qing-dynasty etiquette 请安 was a specific gesture: men dropped to a half-kneel on the right knee (, dǎqiān), women bent slightly with hands on the left knee. You see it constantly in palace dramas like 甄嬛传 (Empresses in the Palace). In modern speech it survives as a polite greeting between generations.
