From Ouyang Xiu's Northern Song ci poem 《生查子·元夕》: 去年元夜时, 花市灯如昼. 月上柳梢头, 人约黄昏后. The poem contrasts a Lantern Festival tryst across two years - one of the most famous 'the scene remains but the person is gone' lyrics in Chinese. (Sometimes attributed instead to Zhu Shuzhen.)
usage
元夜 is the Lantern Festival, the 15th of the first lunar month. 花市 classically meant the festival lantern-and-flower fair. Today the line is borrowed to describe any festive night ablaze with lights.
