It sorted the books known in the Sui into four main divisions,
经 'classics',
史 'histories',
子 'masters' and
集 'collections', replacing the six groups of the Han
艺文志. Of the later dynastic histories, the
旧唐书 kept the name
经籍志, while the
新唐书 and most others went back to
艺文志.
