Tips

history
Serialized in the Hong Kong newspaper 明报 from 1967 to 1969. Its hero 令狐冲, a free-spirited swordsman of the 华山派, is caught between rival sects scheming to rule the martial world, and the novel is often read as a satire of power politics. The title means 'to laugh proudly at the 江湖', the world of martial heroes.
culture
It has been adapted again and again. The 1990 film produced by 徐克 gave the song 沧海一声笑, still a karaoke favourite, and the 2001 TV series starred 李亚鹏 as Linghu Chong.
