history
From 王湾's 《次北固山下》, paired with 江春入旧年 'spring reaches the river while the old year lingers'. Travelling the lower Yangtze at the year's end, the poet sees day born out of the last of the night and spring arrive before the old year is out. The chancellor 张说 (in his name 说 is read Yuè, not shuō) wrote the couplet out in his own hand and hung it in his hall.
