history
景山 is the artificial hill directly north of the Forbidden City, built from earth dug out for the palace moat. The last Ming emperor, 崇祯 (Chóngzhēn), hanged himself on a tree here in 1644 as Beijing fell to rebel forces — the spot is still marked.
On April 25, 1644, the last Ming emperor walked up Jingshan and hanged himself on a locust tree as Li Zicheng's rebel army entered Beijing — the symbolic end of the Ming dynasty.
