Tips

history
Built by the Ming Yongle Emperor between 1406–1420, 故宫 served as the imperial palace for 24 emperors over the Ming and Qing dynasties until the 1911 revolution. Today known as 故宫 (the Palace Museum), it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest preserved wooden palace complex in the world.
usage
故宫 literally means 'former palace'. Note that Taipei also has its 国立故宫 (National Palace Museum), which houses much of the imperial art collection moved from Beijing in 1948–49 — both places share the name 故宫.
