Directed by 程小东 and produced by 徐克, it is based on the story 聂小倩 in 聊斋志异: a poor scholar spends the night in a ruined temple and falls in love with a ghost forced to serve a tree demon. 张国荣 also sang its theme song.

culture

The title, 'a lovely girl's lonely ghost', has been reused for sequels in 1990 and 1991, a 2011 remake, several TV series and a NetEase online game. An unaired 2019 TV version is remembered for 郑爽's pay for it, which led to her 2021 fine for tax evasion.
