The tale comes from 蒲松龄's Qing-dynasty collection 《聊斋志异》: a ghost forced by a demon to lure men to their deaths is saved by the upright scholar 宁采臣. The 1987 Hong Kong film 《倩女幽魂》 (A Chinese Ghost Story), with 王祖贤 and 张国荣, made her the best-known ghost of Chinese cinema.
