九天 (Nine Heavens) refers to the highest reaches of the sky in Chinese cosmology;
玄 carries the Daoist sense of 'mysterious / dark / profound.' She first appears in Han-dynasty texts as the goddess who taught the Yellow Emperor (
黄帝) how to defeat Chiyou (
蚩尤) in the foundational mythological war.
