The Buddhist five eyes rise from ordinary sight to the Buddha's all-seeing eye, and several passed into everyday Chinese: 慧眼 (a discerning eye), 法眼 (an expert's eye), 天眼 (the nickname of the FAST radio telescope). In the news 五眼 is short for the alliance's full name, which adds 联盟 (alliance).
