慧眼 (literally 'wisdom-eye') comes from Buddhist terminology, originally one of the
五眼 (Five Eyes) in Buddhism, the eye that sees through illusion to ultimate truth. In modern Chinese it's secularized into 'a sharp eye for talent / quality / fakes', most often in
慧眼识珠 ('discerning eye recognizes the pearl').
