Short for 第一次世界大战, the way 二战 is short for World War II.
mistakes
The same characters also mean 'one battle'. In 背水一战 'a last-ditch fight' and 一战成名 'to make one's name in a single fight', 一 is the number one and takes the tone change, yí before zhàn. As World War I it means 'first' and keeps yī.
