Tips

culture
Legend says an immortal flew away from the tower on a yellow crane. Cui Hao's poem opens 昔人已乘黄鹤去,此地空余黄鹤楼, and the story goes that Li Bai found it written on the wall and declined to write his own. He did later see off Meng Haoran here in 黄鹤楼送孟浩然之广陵.
history
Built, burned and rebuilt many times since the 3rd century, the present tower dates from 1985 and stands a short way from the old site, which the approach to the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge took over. With 岳阳楼 and 滕王阁 it is one of the three great towers south of the Yangtze.
