雏 (chú) means "young / newly hatched." The character is built from 刍 + 隹 (short-tailed bird) — "the short-tailed bird (bird) [that has just been] fed grass/feed." 雏 also gives 雏形 (chúxíng, rudimentary form / prototype) and 雏菊 (chújú, daisy).
usage
Sometimes used metaphorically for a young, inexperienced person. The verbal phrase 离巢的雏鸟 ("a fledgling that has left the nest") is a stock image for someone newly independent.
