history

The name is Arabic for 'Abode of Peace' (دار السلام, dār as-salām). Tanzania moved its official capital to Dodoma in 1974, but Dar es Salaam remains the country's commercial center and largest port. China built the famous Tanzania-Zambia Railway (TAZARA, 坦赞铁路) ending here in the 1970s.
