An emperor had three kinds of name after death: a
谥号 judging his life, a
庙号 for the ancestral temple, and the
年号 of his reign. Han emperors are known by the posthumous title (
汉武帝, 'the Martial Emperor'), Tang and Song ones by the temple name (
唐太宗), and Ming and Qing ones by the reign title (
康熙).
