In 196 CE, Cao Cao (曹操) moved the puppet Han emperor Xian () here and renamed the city ('Xu capital'); the Wei emperor Cao Pi later renamed it 许昌 ('Xu prospers'). It remains a major Three Kingdoms tourism site in Henan.
