Suzhou numerals evolved from Southern Song-era (suànchóu) counting rods, becoming a shorthand merchants used on bills, ledgers, and price tags. Faster to write than 一二三 and harder to forge than Arabic digits, they survived in Hong Kong wet markets, Chinese medicine shops, and dim sum order slips well into the 20th century.
