本 originally meant 'root' or 'origin' (the bottom of a tree). It came to be used as a measure word for books because books were once made from bound wooden strips.
A short horizontal at the very base of the trunk — pointing exactly where the roots are. Drops the focus underground, hence 'root, origin, foundation'.
