history
From the Ming-dynasty 《韩湘子全集》 (the novelized life of the Daoist immortal Han Xiangzi) ch. 28, where two tricksters describe themselves as practiced at 'wildly stirring and savagely tangling', i.e. confusing and clinging to win an argument. Today the phrase describes someone who refuses to be reasoned with, especially in disputes.
