眇

miǎo
adjective

Meanings

  1. 1 (classical) blind in one eye; one-eyed
  2. 2 (classical) tiny; far-off (same as 渺)

HSK 6
Shēng ér miǎo zhě bù shí rì.

Tips

history
Not used alone in modern Chinese; in the 'one-eyed' sense it is purely classical, and in the 'tiny / distant' sense it was replaced by 渺 (as in 渺小). The right side 少 is the phonetic, also seen in 妙 and 秒.
register
Classical only; modern Chinese writes 渺 for the 'tiny / vast and faint' meaning.

Components

radical
目 mù
eye
The eye radical 目 on the left marks 眇 as a word about sight - specifically a small or sightless eye.
phonetic
少 shǎo
few; small
On the right, 少 supplies the sound and a fitting hint of 'small'; it heads the family with 妙, 秒 and 渺.
