Tips

history
Written by 李行道. A rich man's wife poisons him, blames his concubine, and claims the concubine's son as her own to get the inheritance. 包拯 draws a circle of lime, a 灰阑, puts the boy inside and has both women pull. The concubine lets go rather than hurt him, and he knows she is the mother.
culture
A German version of 1925 inspired Bertolt Brecht's 高加索灰阑记 'The Caucasian Chalk Circle' (1944), which turns the test around: the child goes to the servant girl who raised him, not to his birth mother.
