In classical Chinese 江 almost always meant the Yangtze specifically, while 河 meant the Yellow River. 江水 in Tang poetry is therefore usually the Yangtze. Su Shi's 念奴娇·赤壁怀古 opens with 大江东去 - that 大江 is the Yangtze rolling east.
