In classical Chinese 江 (jiāng) almost always meant the Yangtze specifically, while 河 (hé) meant the Yellow River. 江水 in Tang poetry is therefore usually the Yangtze. Su Shi's 念奴娇·赤壁怀古 opens with 大江东去 — that 大江 is the Yangtze rolling east.
