Two quatrains by the Tang poet 李绅. The first, 春种一粒粟,秋收万颗子, ends with farmers starving in a land where no field lies idle. The second is the one every child learns, and parents quote it to get children to finish their rice: 锄禾日当午,汗滴禾下土。谁知盘中餐,粒粒皆辛苦 'Hoeing the grain at noon, sweat drips onto the soil. Who knows that every grain in the bowl was won by toil?'
