Tips
mistakes
悄 has two readings: qiāo (in 静悄悄 / 悄悄) and qiǎo (in 悄然, 悄声). The Xinhua norm prescribes qiǎo here, although colloquially many speakers say qiāoshēng. Both will be understood; use qiǎo for exams.
usage
Used adverbially in front of a verb of speaking or moving: 悄声说 / 悄声问 / 悄声走开. Stronger relatives: 悄悄 (somewhat quietly), 悄然 (formal/literary, 'silently'), 偷偷 (sneakily, on the sly).
