峨眉山 (Mount Emei) in Sichuan, one of China's Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains. In Jin Yong's《
倚天屠龙记》the sect is led by
灭绝师太 (Abbess Miejue) — which cemented the fictional image of Emei as a predominantly female sect even though the historical Emei martial tradition was not.
