峨眉山 (Mount Emei) in Sichuan, one of China's Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains. In Jin Yong's
《倚天屠龙记》 the sect is led by
灭绝师太 (Abbess Miejue), which cemented the fictional image of Emei as a predominantly female sect even though the historical Emei martial tradition was not.
