Compiled by Qing-Republic-era scholar 朱孝臧 (Zhū Xiàozāng / 朱祖谋, 1857-1931) as a deliberate companion piece to the Tang anthology. Selects 283 lyrics by 88 poets including 苏轼, 李清照, 辛弃疾, 柳永 — the Song-dynasty A-list.

词 (cí) lyrics were originally song-lyrics fitted to fixed melodies (词牌, cípái) like 《水调歌头》 or 《如梦令》. The tunes are mostly lost, but the verse forms survive as the most musical strand of classical Chinese poetry.
