About Xin Qiji

Song dynasty poet and soldier who fought the Jin as a young man and spent his life urging the court to retake the north. He wrote more ci lyrics than any other Song poet; his line 众里寻他千百度 gave 百度 its name.

history

His grandfather named him 弃疾, 'cast off illness', after the Han general 霍去病, 'rid of illness'. As a young rebel he rode with about fifty horsemen into a camp of fifty thousand to seize a traitor.

culture

With 苏轼 he forms the pair 苏辛, leaders of the bold, unrestrained school of ci. Another line of his still in everyday use is 少年不识愁滋味, 'as a youth I never knew the taste of sorrow'.
