A gifted artist but disastrous ruler. His signature (Slender Gold) calligraphy is still admired today, but his neglect of state affairs led to the Jingkang Incident () of 1127, when Jurchen Jin forces sacked Kaifeng and captured him along with his son Emperor Qinzong — ending the Northern Song.
