history
A gifted artist but disastrous ruler. His signature 瘦金体 (Slender Gold) calligraphy is still admired today, but his neglect of state affairs led to the Jingkang Incident (靖康之变) of 1127, when Jurchen Jin forces sacked Kaifeng and captured him along with his son Emperor Qinzong - ending the Northern Song.

Frequently appears in 《水浒传》 (Water Margin) as the reigning emperor, with the novel's corrupt officials 蔡京 and 高俅 serving at his court.
