A literary word for
老天爷. Two famous lines use it:
龚自珍's
我劝天公重抖擞 (I urge the Lord of Heaven to rouse himself again) and
毛泽东's
欲与天公试比高 (vying with Heaven to see who stands taller).
天公作美 means the weather obliges,
天公不作美 that it doesn't. In Taiwan and southern Fujian,
天公 is the
玉皇大帝, the Jade Emperor.
