history

From Xin Qiji's (辛弃疾, Southern Song) 《西江月·夜行黄沙道中》: 稻花香里说丰年，听取蛙声一片 - 'Through the rice-flower fragrance, they speak of the good harvest; one listens, and hears a whole stretch of frog-song.' A canonical pastoral couplet, famous for associating frog-croaks with the promise of a full granary.

usage

Nearly always quoted together with its first line 稻花香里说丰年. 一片 here = 'a whole spread / everywhere at once', quantifying a continuous sound.
