Despite losing the north, the Southern Song was one of the most technologically and commercially advanced societies in world history — printing, gunpowder weapons, paper money (
交子), and a navy with magnetic compasses. Final defeat came at the sea battle of Yamen in 1279, after which the last child emperor was drowned.
