According to legend his mother tattooed 精忠报国 ('serve the country with utmost loyalty') on his back. He was recalled from the front and executed at age 39 on 'trumped-up' (莫须有) charges by Qin Hui (秦桧). Iron statues of Qin Hui and his wife still kneel before Yue Fei's tomb in Hangzhou, where visitors traditionally spit on them.

His ci poem 《满江红·怒发冲冠》 is one of the most famous patriotic works in Chinese literature.
